Taming a Wild One

Description

Sure this photo isn't perfect, but neither is the horse :)

"Him? You want Corey to train him?" Worry bit at her voice, as Lucy stared at the mustang kicking up his heels in the wooded paddock. Then she regains her confidence, and twists her head around to Jessie's Dad. "Where'd he come from, Matthews?" She asks, looking slightly smug, but still serious. Matthew shrugs. "Don't quite know, 'cept that he's from the mountains." "Which range?" Lucy asks, "Which herd?" "Unnamed Range... mostly forest, with a few large clearings and a trail that spirals up the side... never rode there, and I won't be sending the neither of you up there anytime soon... what was your other question?" Matthew scratches his head. "Which herd." Lucy says seriously, watching the stud fly from one end of the fence to the other. "Herd? You know so well as I do that there hasn't been a heard in the Sunshine Ranges that we know of in years. If there's mustangs out there, they're over the ridge, in the range on the other side.... He's a loner, Lucy, he's a loner."

Corey looks at the horse, and thinks in his mind that he'll need a half hour to catch the mustang and coax him to the small round pen. Deciding it's time, he takes the simple rope halter and lunge line and opens the paddock gate. He walks in slowly. The horse is at the other end, breathing in the early afternoon air. Corey shortly comes up at his side, and to his shock, the horse doesn't bolt on him. The stud turns his head towards Corey, and looks as if there's something, far away, that he doesn't want to do, but he has to. He nearly rears then, almost kicks up his heals in frenzi, but he doesn't. Instead he meets eyes with the cowboy, and lets the halter settle around his head. Corey moves slowly, leaving the lunge line less than taught in his hand. There's that looks in the horse's eye, like there's something he has to do, but doesn't really want to. It's not until they're half way to the pen that he begins to gallop, causing Corey to pull on his line. Something takes over his eye and it doesn't leave as they walk through the round pen gate. Corey puts some slack into his rope, hoping it will relief the horse. It doesn't. He rears, and Corey quickly gains control. He tugs at the lunge line, in an effort to bring down the raged stallion. But the second the two's eyes meet, the look leaves the stud's eyes, and everything becomes OK.
